At times , Supernatural ’s ninth time of year has feel like a show groping for thing it has n’t done before . ( Sam already got addicted to demon parentage and lose his psyche , so why not have an angel own him ? ) There have been funny conclusion , like that attempted twirl - off . But at least the time of year finale was a darn solid ending .
This season get with both Heaven and Hell facing polite state of war , thanks to Metatron vomit up all the Angel out of Heaven and Crowley getting sabotage . Both of those subplots had a lot of uncanny digressions and switchbacks . For a few episodes , we were suppose to wish about Bartholomew versus that other guy , and the Reverend Buddy Boyle got a batch of screentime for some ground . And the Knight of Hell Abaddon had all kind of plans for man that never crystalized .
But in the end , the Hell plot line seemed to be aimed at forcing Dean to get the Mark of Cain , which bend him into a supernatural killer with less and less control over his urges . Dean killing Abaddon is just another dance step on his journeying . And the Heaven storyline roll up setting up Metatron as the time of year ’s ultimate scoundrel , who want to be God .

And it all add together up to a turn on chorus line of , “ Everything is Dean ’s fault . ” Dean is the one who would n’t let Sam close up the gates of Hell , because Sam ’s life is more important than the thousand of others kill by demons since then . If Sam had finished the line , Abaddon would n’t be an outcome . Also , the first half of this season was about Dean getting the angel Gadreel to have Sam , leading to the death of Kevin and Metatron ’s untouchability .
In a means , Dean lose his humanity is just a consequence of all the icky decisions Dean has made since he got back from Purgatory .
But like I tell , this was a darn solid ending , which paid off the past year ’s storytelling in a way that felt solid and consistent . Definitely easily than the retiring few season finale .

The episode is mostly about the two angels , Metatron and Castiel , carrying on two simultaneous PR campaigns . Castiel first has to fetch up winning over Metatron ’s deputy Gadreel ( a job complicated by the fact that Dean just stabbed him ) and then get to Heaven and gain the supporting of all the other angels , who ’ve been swayed by all of Metatron ’s fancy promises . Metatron , meanwhile , is trying to win over humans that he ’s a Modern christ — because controlling Heaven and rule the angels is nothing without human worshipper .
Metatron ’s later spell offence is built around exaggerated , fulsome humility , pretending to be a roofless man named “ Marv ” who extend around heal the macabre and raise the dead . “ Marv ” becomes a Youtube wiz and then sets up at a dispossessed pack , where he becomes so popular , the mass there kill a malcontent holy person for him . As he tell Dean , people do n’t desire cynicism , they want something to believe in . They do n’t really care what it is , either .
Castiel ’s attempt to antagonize Metatron ’s lies , up in Heaven , are more complicated . His former lieutenant engage him up , and wo n’t believe him when he says the suicide bombers were n’t his flaw . She does n’t want faith any more , she wants trial impression . And somewhat ironically , the proof that Castiel was n’t behind the suicide submarine sandwich in his name is that Gadreel turns into a self-annihilation bomber in Castiel ’s name . And then Castiel , whose other attempt to practice a 1980s - movie ruse to get into Heaven ( “ prisoner and see ” ) betray miserably , utilize another 1980s - moving picture ruse to give away Metatron : he disperse Metatron ’s undercover confession to all the other angels , using Metatron ’s extra magic radio .

But first , Castiel find where Metatron has hide the source of his power , the Angel Tablet : in his typewriter , of course of action . And he smashes the pill , ending Metatron ’s might and also eliminating one of the most knock-down objects in the universe .
It ’s a sheer move to make Sam and Dean almost the side quality in the season coda of their own show , but it ’s one that pay dividend . This is partly thanks to another sheer pick the episode work : Dean lose the big engagement . Badly .

At first , Sam and Castiel engage Dean by because he dig Gadreel . But then Gadreel himself confirms what Dean keep suppose : Dean is their adept shot at ending Metatron , thanks to the Mark of Cain . When Dean finally goes to confront Metatron , he once again sidelines Sam , knocking him out . And then Dean … gets his ass kicked , because Castiel is too dumb to look for the Angel Tablet in the most obvious place . And just as Castiel finally ruin the Angel Tablet , Dean gets fatally stabbed .
If the finish of this sequence was to subvert expectations , then well done . I more or less expected Dean to kill Metatron at the last moment , and then stab Sam as the episode ’s big cliffhanger . ( Dean stabbing Sam is probably time of year 10 fabric . )
The other liberal kicker was Sam doing what he assert up and down he would n’t do : compromise his principles to save Dean ’s life . Earlier this season , Dean say he conduct extreme measures to spare Sam , and if the attitude were overrule , Sam would do the same . And Sam said no , he would n’t . As acquit out by Sam leave Dean in Purgatory , Sam not trying to get Dean out of Hell , and a few other things .

But when the chips are down and Dean is bushed , Sam goes right to the Demon Crash Pad , to summon Crowley . Probably to yell at him at first , but then finally to make some frightful deal .
Which convey to listen another direction the installment defies expectations somewhat : there ’s no big talk between the brothers . No balancing , no “ processing our spirit ” moment . At one pointedness , Dean is like , “ Hey , I … ” and Sam is like , “ Whatever , brah . Let ’s go kill Metatron . ” give how the teary-eyed “ sharing our feelings ” moment used to be the lifeblood of this show , it ’s a gutsy move that the show has basically eliminated it at this detail .
Sam is keep open from selling his soul , or the Impala ( which is plausibly worth more ) , to bring Dean back to life . Because Dean comes back all on his own , in the installment ’s final moment , sold attractively by Mark Sheppard . Crowley genuinely seems a bit sorry as he keep insisting that he never lie in to Dean , exactly , in describing the consequences of the Mark of Cain . Because the Mark wo n’t just let you go , just like that . As presently as Dean touches the First Blade , he comes back . As a daimon .

Crowley invites Dean to go howl at the Moon , a reference back to an earlier diner conversation where Crowley ask if Dean did n’t sometimes feel like abandon the grind of hunting monsters . But somehow I doubt random playtime is what Crowley has in mind : there are hints in this sequence that his grasp on Hell is none too stable . He tell he ’s kicked human blood , but he ’s allege that before . His masseuse seems a bit apprehensive about his leadership qualities . And he order Dean that Hell is “ complicated . ”
To which Dean respond , “ Shower sex is complicated . ” And who knows , maybe “ allow ’s have shower sex ” is what Crowley means by “ permit ’s go yawl at the Sun Myung Moon . ” That ’s the Supernatural twirl - off we all desire , after all .
