It follows astronaut Roy McBride ( Pitt ) , who ’s sent to travel to the edges of the solar organization in search of his father , played by Tommy Lee Jones . Roy ’s near daddy disappeared a few decades ago while experiment on a dangerous material that could put down the world . And now that the creation is settle aside in something called The Surge , it ’s time to find some answers .
Ad Astra , which has been in the workssince 2017 , has been brag as Gray ’s attempt at “ the most realistic line drawing of space travel that ’s been put in a moving-picture show , ” following on the hound of other similarly ambitious project like Gravity andInterstellar . I ’ve been psyched about this movie for a while , even give my troubled touch sensation about using Heart of Darkness as divine guidance . But by the terminal of the trailer , I found myself still waiting for that “ wow ” element I ’d been anticipating . It look … all right , I guess .

And I ’m just going to throw this out there : If it does n’t fall out that Liv Tyler is playing a secret alien or something — which I think is possible , given how her character is not named on IMDB — I’m going to be Hercules level of disappointed . Tyler deserves more than to be stuck reprize her “ woman waits for man to return from space ” role . On that short letter , make Donald Sutherland and Ruth Negga secret extraterrestrial too . pit , make them all hidden aliens . I ’m game .
Ad Astra was previously set to make out out on Memorial Day weekend , but has faced aseries of delays . It wasrecently rumoredto have been removed from the schedule wholly , following Disney ’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox . Now it ’s back on the agenda , and specify to come out September 20 .
