Forty years ago today , Doctor Who aired an episode where the Doctor cautioned his presently - to - be companion Leela all about the danger of citizenry altering facts to “ go their prospect . ” Huh , now where does that go familiar ?
It ’s the 40th day of remembrance of the classic Dr. Who episode “ The Face of Evil Part 4 . ” The episode , which air January 22 , 1977 , is all about the Doctor strain to make repose between two warring tribes , the primitive Sevateem and the technically magnificent Tesh . After Xoanon , a computer who the Sevateem idolize as a idol , make control of Leela ’s mind , the Doctor breaks her trance through hypnosis . But not before prompt her , and the audience , how hard some masses run to win over themselves or others that there are five lights .
“ You know , the very powerful and the very dazed have one thing in common , ” the Doctor enjoin . “ They do n’t castrate their view to fit the facts . They alter the facts to fit their scene . ”

One more clip , for the mass in the back .
Kellyanne Conway , in an interview on Meet the Press , recently declared that White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer was n’t lying when he said that President Donald Trump ’s inaugural was the most - attended one in history ( it was n’t ) . Rather , she said Spicer was sharing “ alternative facts . ” He was n’t , he was lying .
Calling something “ alternative ” is another way of swerving around the truth in fiat to serve a narration . It ’s a tactic that ’s already been used to try and mask white nationalism as “ substitute rightfield , ” and will likely be used again to rationalize more lies and dogmatism . Luckily , the Doctor is smarter than that . Hopefully we are too .
