The drum solo has long been synonymous with overweening posturing , with the worst excesses of rock’n’roll virtuoso exhibitionism . The reputation is inauspicious , but whatever one believe of drum solos , the forthcoming album of solo drum workplace by Machinefabriek is something entirely apart from the usual connexion . The source sound recording for Machinefabriek ’s album — its bland title of respect , Drum Solos , put to sleep concerns of showmanship — is all parallel barrel equipment , yet as evidenced by a six and a half hour prevue track carry to hissoundcloud.comaccount , it has nothing to do with the crowd - rousing arena epos of yore .
It is , or else , a patient , occasionally irritant - exuding , and all around thoughtfully considered endeavor . The equipment is used more for textural than percussive issue , and the extent to which there is anything kindred to a rhythm or a rhythm is how the tam-tam - alike cymbals take the form of slow , undulate sine waves . The music is processed this way and that , at times deep removed from the original sound , including what seems to be a backwards effect .

Driven by my love for solo albums by drummers and percussionist like Jon Mueller , Wil Guthrie , Nick Hennies and Burkhard Beins , I ’ve made Drum Solos . It ’s my take on a solo drum record , despite the fact that I miss the gift to strike a steady cadence or a play a tympan roll . Instead , I used the sounds of a tympan outfit as a sounce for further processing .
I booked a rehearsel room with a tympan outfit , and recorded as much sound as I could in one afternoon . Hitting , bowing , stroking , whatever ways I could find to produce auditory sensation , I register . And these soundfiles were chopped and fuck til it sounded like what you hear on the album .
Each cut focusses on one part of the drum outfit . I like to intend that purposefully utilise limitation like that make me more originative , and my work more focussed . It ’s part of the aim to make my music as minimalistic and ‘ pure ’ ( whatever that may be ) as potential . In this eccentric it resulted in a short but varried and at times meditative record album that might not have any virtuoso brake drum tumbling on it , but shows its character on a more subtle point .
