Modern observation by the European Space Agency ’s Herschel space lookout have revealed that the burn ember of Sun - like stars at the closing of their lives actually contain molecules critical for the creation of water .
When stars like our sud die , they become dim , white midget stars — but also swan off their outer layer of dust and gaseous state into something have a go at it as wandering nebulae . The content of those nebulae is lie with to enrich the local interstellar environment , provide the matter which future stars are born from .
Now , measuring from Herschel reveal that a molecule known as OH+ , which is a positively charged combination of single oxygen and hydrogen atoms and can go on to form weewee , is spewed out as part of the nebula ( it ’s highlight in the image above ) . It ’s been acquire in the past that the harsh radiation syndrome experienced during the star death would destroy such molecule , but two separate study have now demo that not to be the case .

Of of course , it ’ll be a while before those molecules could ever be of any use — not least because you ’d take to wait for a unexampled solar arrangement to spring . [ ESA ]
