We ’ve see ridiculous thing about the Nikon D4 ’s low - light functioning : In short , word was that you’re able to basically takegreat photos in a cave . We did n’t go cave , but we did put this $ 6000 monster through its low idle yard , and the results were even good than we ’d hoped .

I had the luck to shoot down with one of the first production framework of the Nikon D4 . We first playedwith the D4 at CES , but apart from the look-alike Nikon has shown us , we did n’t know what actual genuine - world picture would look like until now . I had a chance to drop just a few minutes with one of the first production model of the D4 — just long enough to get some photo and picture sample before Nikon spirited it aside . We ’ll do a full review in a few calendar week with bunches and bunches more picture . But , hey , we ’re seem at these photos , so we figured you might as well , too .

So can this tv camera really shoot glorious photos up to ISO 12,800 ? On preliminary inspection the solvent is yes and no . The photos look very good — for ISO 12,800 . Take a face at the cropped image to the right and you ’ll see that at ISO 12,800 , pic are definitely noisy and , it ’s pretty muddy along the border of the bottle . I have n’t tried to strip it up , but in a pinch , you could make this look-alike work .
Luckily , this camera is good enough that you probably wo n’t ever have to go down that far . We were shooting in our dark office on a dank day so the lighting experimental condition were basically horrendous , and look at all the nice detail in that tripod shot taken at ISO 200 . As with any photographic camera , it ’s better to stay below ISO 3200 . It ’s just nice to know that if you postulate to go higher , you could .
The D4 also take very promising video . There ’s no watered-silk interference on the crisscross patter on the bench , and the shutter remain reliable even though I ’ve get shaky hands .
We ’re still swear out and scrutinize the photos as carefully as possible so we ’ll update with more note before long .
