Inflight Wi - Fi sucks , but it ’s about to get a piddling better . Gogo just announced it ’s going to start using planet to make its in - air Wi - Fispeeds six clip faster . Which is to say : usable .
Up until now , Gogo Wi - Fi has been powered by Air - to - Ground spectrum Gogo corrupt up back in 2006 , which gave it a monopoly on that delivery chemical mechanism . The problem is , ATG is n’t very fast , so Gogo was only able to furnish speeds of 3Mbps to 10Mbps ( that ’s about 3 G ) per plane , and it only develop worse as more people sign on .

Gogo ’s young system is leverage satellites as well as the honest-to-goodness ATG organization and the result is — the company claims—60Mbps per plane . Gogo ’s design is to take incoming datum from the orbiter for a speed boost , but expend the ATG for outward-bound traffic , so upload focal ratio would still be slow as hell . But with download speeds like that , you might be capable to actually stream television . Or at least get through most of the flight on passable internet . in all likelihood not both at the same prison term though .
Gogo ’s not the only one that ’s been trying this feeler . JetBlue ’s Fly - Fi networkis built on similar planet technical school . The catch is that it requires outfitting planes with bigger , heavier antennas , which is both annoying ( installation takes the aircraft out of commission for three sidereal day ) and expensive .

A future of 60Mbps flying Wi - Fi is promising , but it ’ll still be a while before it roam out . Gogo will be fit out planes with the fresh antennas starting this twelvemonth , but the new scheme is n’t set to be in operation until the second half of 2014 at the earliest . And in that time , the passing fast Wi - Fi is only planned to make it to 53 aircraft . But it ’s a scratch .
Hopefully with more bandwidth to go around , and competitor like JetBlue bark up the same tree , Gogo wo n’t be able-bodied to keep its price as high as they are now . With higher speed , it ’s surd to reason that you need to keep the price so high just to limit demand . And , of course , who live if it ’ll really be that riotous until it in reality roll out . But here ’s to hope it ’s a footfall towards a usable flying - internet Zion , and not a world where there ’s just fast cyberspace that ’s still too expensive to be worth it . [ WSJ , Forbes ]
